The 8th Annual Low Country Boil
February 22, 2013

Mark your calendars! A little "snow-bird" from Wisconsin told us that the date has been set for the 2013 Annual Low Country Boil, an event you simply do not want to miss!

LCB 2012The event started seven years ago with a group of folks led by Kenn Krouse from the Wisconsin Snobird Club. They frequented the zoo often and approached Patti one day wanting to know how they could help raise funds for the zoo.

Together they came up with the idea for "The First Annual Low Country Boil" and as word spread quickly they sold 560 tickets to members of snowbird clubs from eleven states including: WI, MI, MN, IN, NY, OH, PA, IA, IL, MO, ND & SD.

"The Low Country Boil" is an overwhelmingly popular annual event and each year the ticket sales climb! Last year they sold 920 tickets and they aniticpate over 1,100 for the 2013 event! We love seeing so many familiar faces come back year after year to help our zoo - it's like a family reunion! Tickets are only available through Snowbird Clubs and sell out quickly, so contact your participating Snow Bird Club for more information on next year's event.

Watching the cooking operation is almost as enticing as the meal itself. With four seatings of over 225 each, Ken and his crew of over 90 workers have this process down to a science as timing is everything to ensure all the elements are cooked perfectly in such large quanitities. They hope to add additional seatings to accommodate more people once we move to the new zoo! Many thanks to these sponsors who generously donated or provided items at cost to make this event possible!

Blaloc SeafoodsFor seven years Blalock Seafood & Specialty Market has been providing all of the shrimp for and sausage for our Low Country Boil.

Last year they donated 390 pounds of tasty fresh shrimp from the Gulf and 270 pounds of sausage!

Huge thanks to the Blalock's for their continued support!

Burris Farm Marketn
All of the fresh produce for this southern favorite comes to us from Burris Farm Market in Loxley, AL. It takes 9 bushes of beans, 9 cases of corn, 30 bags of pearl onions, 250 pounds of cream new potatoes, and 40 pounds of lemons to accompany the shrimp.

Big thank you to Burris for sending these fresh and colorful veggies our way!

Eddie Boy's

This year Flipper's Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar of Orange Beach introduced their hometown favorite "Eddie Boy's Homemade Ice Cream" and provided a tasty frozen treat to each guest! Thanks so much, Eddie!

In addition to ticket sales, the Snowbirds also raise money for the zoo with 50/50 drawings that two lucky winners per seating will get to claim.

Just a few days after the 2012 event, the committee members presented our zoo with a check for $7,500! Over the last seven years, these incredibly dedicated folks have raised over $35,000 for our zoo! From the bottom of our feed bowls to the paved pathways of our new zoo - we thank you!
